What is hunchback posture?

For most people, what’s often called “hunchback posture” is a muscle-related problem. In some cases, the shape of your spinal bones may also play a role, but that’s less common.

Every spine has a natural curve in the upper back called kyphosis. This curve is completely normal. But when the curve becomes exaggerated, it’s referred to as hyperkyphosis—which is what people usually mean when they say “hunchback.”

So what can you do about it?

The good news is: you can train your way out of it.

To address hunchback posture, you want to train the muscles that help bring your bones into a more upright position. That means:

  • Strengthening the upper back, shoulders, and core
  • Increasing mobility in the spine and ribcage
  • Improving posture awareness throughout the day

Even if your bone shape contributes to your kyphosis (which may limit how much improvement you can make), muscle training is still the best and only path to halting or reversing the issue long term.

Muscles move bones.

And if you want better posture, your muscles have to learn how to support it.
