My hamstrings never get looser despite lots of stretching.
I hear this all the time—and I’ve been there myself.
If your hamstrings still feel tight even after months (or years) of stretching, there are a couple of important things to consider.
First, look at the ratio of time spent stretching vs. time spent shortening the hamstrings.
If you stretch your hamstrings for 5 minutes a day, but spend the other 23 hours and 55 minutes sitting, standing, or sleeping in positions that keep them shortened and inactive... you're training short, weak hamstrings 99.7% of the day.
From that perspective, it’s not surprising that progress is slow.
Second, you may need to go beyond static stretching.
What’s often missing is contract/relax and loaded stretching —where you build strength in the lengthened position of your hamstrings. This can dramatically improve flexibility and control.
I’ve found this to be a game-changer for people who’ve hit a plateau with traditional hamstring stretches.
If you're not seeing progress, try increasing the frequency of your stretching and adding in more active, strength-based techniques—especially ones that challenge your hamstrings when they’re fully lengthened.
