Is hip surgery ever a good idea?

From all the stories I’ve heard and the research I’ve read, my personal, non-medical opinion is this:

Stay away from a surgeon’s knife unless you’re absolutely, positively sure you’ve done everything else you can to avoid it.

I’m not saying that hip surgeries—whether arthroscopy or total hip replacement—never work. Sometimes they do relieve pain. But that doesn’t mean:

  • They always work (they don’t), OR
  • That they work for the reasons surgeons claim.

Surgery is often presented as a guaranteed fix, but real-world outcomes (and the research) paint a much more complicated picture.

Bottom line:

Surgery might be the right option for some people, but I believe it should always be the last option—not the first.
